Background
In July 2024, Toronto City Council issued a motion requesting PortsToronto implement a Motorized Watercraft Exclusion Zone (MWEZ) off Hanlan’s Point Beach in the interest of public safety.
This new safety zone extends 200 metres from the shoreline along the west side of the Toronto Islands. It is designed to enhance safety and improve the experience for all water users by providing a safe area for non-motorized watercraft such as kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards, while helping boaters navigate more safely in a high-traffic area.
The MWEZ, which is expected to be in place in late May 2025, is a pilot initiative for the 2025 summer season. Feedback from all water users — including boaters, paddlers, and beachgoers — is welcomed and encouraged.
