Toronto (March 31, 2015) – With regard to the March 30, 2015, Toronto Star article titled “Toronto says Federal Government Owes it $4 Million,” the Toronto Port Authority (doing business as PortsToronto) would like to correct information specific to the allegation of debts owed to the City of Toronto by 1518756 Ontario Ltd., the company which owns Captain John’s floating restaurant (“Captain John’s”).

While PortsToronto owns the slip at the foot of Yonge Street where Captain John’s restaurant, also known as the MV Jadran, has been berthed for decades, it does not own the ship. As such, any outstanding debt occurring as a result of “unpaid 2002 to 2014 taxes, water charges and penalties,” or any other outstanding debts, are the sole responsibility of “Captain John’s,” and not PortsToronto nor the federal government, as the article suggests.

PortsToronto is currently working together with the City of Toronto and other stakeholders, through a process approved by the Federal Court, to have the ship removed from Toronto’s Harbour. Proposals from potential buyers are due to PortsToronto by April 13, 2015, with the ship’s removal slated for no later than May of this year.
