Toronto (June 21, 2016)
– PortsToronto today announced the shortlist of films that will be put to a public vote to determine the final movie line-up for the sixth annual Sail-in Cinema free movie festival being held August 18-20 at Sugar Beach. Voting is now open at www.sailincinema.com
and with this year’s theme of “Books to Big Screen,” audiences will have the opportunity to experience – or re-experience – their favourite stories from land or water, on an enormous four-story, two-sided, floating screen anchored in Lake Ontario.
Voting will close July 12, and the three winning films will be announced soon after. Updates and early polling results will be shared on social media using the #SailInCinema hashtag.
“Again this year, PortsToronto will give the community the opportunity to vote for their favourite Sail-In Cinema movies and have a say in choosing the final film line-up for this year’s event,” said Deborah Wilson, Vice President, Communications and Public Affairs, PortsToronto. “Last year 5,465 votes were cast by the public, setting a new record- for Toronto’s only outdoor floating film event. This year, with so many great films to choose from, we encourage Torontonians to vote to ensure their favourite film makes the final cut. Whether invoking childhood memories with Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
, re-living pivotal moments in modern history with Forrest Gump
, or embarking on a cinematic adventure with Life of Pi
, it’s anyone’s guess which movies will unspool on the shores of Sugar Beach this August.”
Three movies in total will be chosen by public vote from the following curated shortlist of movies.
- Forrest Gump
- The Princess Bride
- The Wizard of Oz
- How to Train Your Dragon
- Charlotte’s Web (2006)
- Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)
- Life of Pi
- The King's Speech
- The Martian
- Groundhog Day
- The Help
- Casino Royale
PortsToronto’s Sail-In Cinema has grown to become a not-to-be-missed summer outing for the entire family, attracting more than 11,000 people on land and 100 boats over the three-day period. The free festival will once again offer the world’s first two-sided floating movie experience of its size with this year’s event promising a truly memorable cinematic experience with custom configured audio and cinema-quality digital projectors.
Non-stop activities, food and entertainment will once again be offered by event sponsors prior to the start of each night’s feature film to provide a full evening of fun for all ages. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. each night with the film starting at approximately 8:00 p.m.
PortsToronto is pleased to have new and returning partners this year including Toyota, Redpath Sugar, Christie Digital, CP24, the Toronto Star, Porter Airlines, aroma espresso bar, North American Logistics and The Waterfront BIA.
