Toronto Port Authority receives Supreme Court of Canada decision on municipal Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILTs)

Toronto – Toronto Port Authority (TPA) President and Chief Executive Officer Geoffrey Wilson issued the following statement, in response to media enquiries, regarding today’s Supreme Court of Canada decision involving a dispute between the City of Montreal and two federal bodies, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Montreal Port Authority.

The dispute centred on the amount of Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILTs) the federal bodies owed to the City of Montreal for municipal services, and whether this amount should be comparable to private-sector property owners:

“The Supreme Court’s decision is entirely consistent with the Toronto Port Authority’s approach to the PILTs process. We believe the TPA has a responsibility to pay its fair share for the municipal services we use. We further believe that PILTs payable to the City of Toronto should be relative to what we would pay in business taxes if the TPA were a private-sector operator. The Court’s ruling dealt with a dispute that was unrelated to any issues that have arisen in Toronto between the TPA and the City of Toronto in recent years.”
