Toronto (May 5, 2014) – Recognized as the world’s first two-sided floating movie experience and the city’s largest outdoor theatre, the Toronto Port Authority is proud to announce the return of its ever-popular, free Sail-In Cinema™ movie event this August 14 to 16 at Toronto’s Sugar Beach, located at 25 Dockside Drive.

Sail-In Cinema offers families and film fans alike the chance to watch movies under the open skies in a unique setting on the city’s waterfront. Each night at dusk (approximately 8:45 p.m.), the festival will showcase a movie, to be voted on by the public in the coming months, that can be viewed from land or boat on a two-sided screen anchored to a barge on Lake Ontario.

“In just three years, Sail-In Cinema has become a highly anticipated, award-winning event that saw a record-breaking 350 per cent increase in attendance last year,” said Geoff Wilson, President and Chief Executive Officer, Toronto Port Authority. “The Toronto Port Authority is pleased to once again invite families, movie lovers and outdoor enthusiasts to experience Toronto’s waterfront through this free, one-of-a-kind event.”

Sail-In Cinema was started in 2011 as part of the TPA’s centennial celebrations. It has since grown from a weekend audience of 2,000 moviegoers and 70 boats to more than 6,500 moviegoers and 90 boats in 2013.

The two-sided, inflatable screen has a 40x20-foot viewing surface, sits in a four-story tall frame and weighs more than 700 lbs. – one of the largest outdoor movie screens in North America. The screen will sit on a 60x90-foot barge that was custom-made for the Sail-In Cinema™ event.

This year, the festival will again feature a “marketplace” of sponsors and community organizations that contribute to Sail-In Cinema™, offering event attendees access to food trucks, free samples of beverages and snacks, as well as the chance to participate in crowd games and activities. There will also be pre-screening entertainment for early arrivers to enjoy.
