Billy Bishop Airport to Conduct Security Response Training Exercise on October 21, 2017

Toronto (October 19, 2017) – PortsToronto will be conducting a security response training exercise at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport during the evening of October 21, 2017.

The routine security exercise tests airport protocols, procedures, communications and planning for security related incidents and is mandated by Transport Canada. This simulated scenario aids in ensuring that the airport maintains a high level of security response preparedness and will involve multiple agencies including; Toronto Police Services, Toronto Fire, (and related Marine Units), Toronto Paramedic Services, as well as staff and officials from the various agencies, airport stakeholders and airlines that operate out of Billy Bishop Airport.

The scenario that has been developed to test the security preparedness on October 21, involves a simulated security situation in the terminal and waiting areas near the gates. From 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. those visiting, viewing or passing by the airport may witness:
  • 30-40 emergency personal including the Toronto Police Marine Unit and Toronto Fire boats, and fire trucks, as well emergency vehicles in and around the airport with the potential for flashing lights.
  • Volunteer actors serving in various roles, including as passengers who may appear to be in distress and are being removed, assessed and/or transported by emergency personnel.
Please be advised that this is an exercise only. There will be no impact on regular flight arrival and departure times and minimal impact to the community as there will be no sirens and minimal noise during the exercise.

Travellers choosing to use the ferry may experience a slight delay in service between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. as emergency services vehicles cross to the island-side of the airport to participate in the exercise. Passengers are encouraged to use the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport pedestrian tunnel to access the island terminal.

To maintain the integrity of the exercise, media will not be permitted on-site.
