Toronto, ON (February 20, 2015) – Please be advised that as of March 9, 2015, brick, ceramic tile and porcelain will no longer be accepted at the Leslie Street Lakefill Site, as these types of materials are no longer needed to aid in the formation of the Leslie Street Spit.
Clean fill, such as soil, sand and rocks, will continue to be permitted, but must be accompanied by a clean fill report from the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA). PortsToronto has been carefully forming the Leslie Street Spit through surplus fill from development sites around Toronto since the 1950s, for the designed purpose of properly separating, containing and disposing of material dredged from the Harbour to prevent flooding. Today, as the Leslie Street Spit’s land formation nears its completion, PortsToronto, along with the TRCA, has converted the area into approximately 500 hectares of land that is home to a variety of wildlife and native plants, and serves as a green oasis for people to enjoy minutes from Toronto’s downtown.
