Toronto (July 8, 2016) – A significant three-year rehabilitation initiative taking place on the airfield at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is underway. This project is being undertaken in an effort to modernize the airport and ensure it continues to serve as an economic engine for the city as well as providing efficient service to the 2.5 million passengers who travel through the airport each year.
PortsToronto has implemented a number of unique measures to minimize the impact of construction activities on local residents including limitations on construction vehicle access. These procedures will ensure minimal impacts on local residents as well as travellers related to construction traffic, and further demonstrate PortsToronto’s commitment to balance within a mixed use waterfront.

In order to reduce the traffic through the Bathurst Quay Neighbourhood, the majority of equipment and materials are transported to the site by barge from the Port Lands to a temporary dock on the south east side of the airport.
Photo: The floating barge can carry 600 tonnes of aggregate material from the Port Lands to the airport, eliminating the need for 50 dump trucks (25 each way) on the roads in the Bathurst Quay Neighbourhood.
Photo: Aggregates are delivered to Billy Bishop Airport for the new pavement structure of runway 06-24. The rehabilitation project involves the majority of airfield surfaces at the airport including the airport’s main runway 08-26 which is used by the majority of our stakeholders including our commercial carriers Air Canada and Porter Airlines. The initiative is necessary to replace the existing aging civil and electrical infrastructure (pavements and lighting) for the airport’s runways, taxiways and apron areas.
