Toronto (July 17, 2014) – The Toronto Port Authority (TPA) today announced the movies that will screen at this year’s Sail-In Cinema™, Toronto’s largest outdoor theatre and floating movie experience. Over the last month, the TPA invited the public to vote for their favourite movie from a shortlist of 10 movies grouped under this year’s theme “Creature Craze.” By the close of voting yesterday, a record-breaking 4,900 votes were cast and three clear winners emerged.
Ranging from the prehistoric to the oceanic to the intergalactic, this year’s movies have something for everyone and will unspool as follows:
· Jaws (back by popular demand) on Thursday, August 14
· Jurassic Park on Friday, August 15
· E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial on Saturday, August 16
“We are thrilled with the number of people who voted this year – which represents an almost fourfold increase from last year – and are excited to screen the films that have been chosen by popular demand,” said Deborah Wilson, Vice President, Communications and Public Affairs. “Each of the movies will offer a unique experience to audiences: We expect E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial will attract a kids-and-family audience and tap into a sense of nostalgia, while Jurassic Park will appeal to those looking for more heart-racing action. As for Jaws, this film is a returning favourite and will no doubt draw an audience looking for the unique experience of watching the rampage of a killer shark while they sit near, or better yet, on the water. Interestingly all of the films in this year’s festival are from the renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who clearly continues to be a fan favourite.”
Free landside tickets are now available at
www.sailincinema.com. While tickets are free, it is necessary to obtain a ticket given that there is limited seating on the landside and entry is subject to availability of space. The first 500 ticketholders on site each night will receive special seating and attendees will have a chance to win several prizes from Sail-In Cinema™ partners. Boat mooring will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The festival also features a marketplace of sponsors and community organizations that partner with Sail-In Cinema™ to provide additional entertainment, food services and free samples, as well as the chance to participate in games and activities.
Sail-In Cinema™ will be held from
August 14 to 16, 2014, at Sugar Beach located at 25 Dockside Drive. Families and film fans alike can watch movies under the open skies in a truly unique setting on the city’s waterfront. Each night at dusk (approximately 8:45 p.m.), the festival will showcase a movie that can be viewed from land or boat on the world’s first two-sided floating movie screen anchored to a barge on Lake Ontario. Movie Synopsis
Jaws (1975)
The peaceful community of Amity Island is being terrorized by a huge great white shark. Fear of the water is affecting life and tourism on the island so sheriff Brody, with the help of marine biologist Hooper and weathered sea captain Quint, decide to go after the shark and kill it in open water.
Jurassic Park (1993)

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
E.T. is a story of friendship and discovery about an extraterrestrial being from outer space who is accidentally stranded on Earth. In his search for refuge, E.T. wanders into a backyard where he is discovered by a ten-year-old boy. The boy assumes responsibility for the alien, as he desperately searches for a way to reunite the creature with his own kind and return him home.
