Winning Movies Announced for Sail-In Cinema™ 2018 Promise to Take Audiences to Other Worlds

Toronto (July 19, 2018) - The votes have been tallied and it's a slam dunk! Don't miss the Looney Tunes and a goblin king making their debut at PortsToronto's eighth-annual Sail-In Cinema movie festival being held August 10 and 11 at Sugar Beach.

This year’s theme “In Other Worlds” will take audiences on a journey through the Goblin King’s maze in search of what matters most on Friday night. On Saturday night, we’ll do it all again by bringing audiences courtside to watch the Looney Tunes face off against the Monstars in a high-stakes basketball game. Sail-in Cinema 2018’s winning movies and screening dates are as follows:

  • Labyrinth on Friday, August 10
  • Space Jam on Saturday, August 11

"Voters faced a difficult decision with so many great movies to choose from this year but several clear favourites emerged early on with Labyrinth taking the top spot," said Deborah Wilson, Vice President, Communications and Public Affairs, PortsToronto. "This year promises to be an even greater experience with the introduction of our new HD digital LED screens and custom audio that will truly make the experience out of this world. We are counting down the days to this great summer tradition that brings families to the water's edge for two nights of festivities, water displays, music, free treats - and, of course, film."

PortsToronto is delighted to have new and returning partners this year including Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, Menkes, Redpath Sugar, CTV, Porter Airlines, Waterfront BIA and North American Logistics Inc.

While Sail-In Cinema is a free event, there is limited seating on the landside and entry is subject to availability of space. Boat mooring will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Non-stop activities, food and entertainment will once again be offered by event sponsors prior to the start of each night's feature film. Arrive early for a full evening of fun for all ages! About Sail-in Cinema™

Sail-In Cinema™, presented by PortsToronto, is the world's first two-sided floating movie experience of its kind. The free film festival transforms Toronto's Sugar Beach into an outdoor movie theatre over three nights. Movies are chosen by public vote and shown under the open skies on a large, digital, two-sided screen set atop a barge in Toronto Harbour, allowing moviegoers to enjoy the films by land or by boat. The inaugural Sail-In Cinema™ was held in 2011 to mark PortsToronto's centennial year. The annual event attracts more than 10,000 people on land and 100 boats over the three-day period and is now a permanent fixture on Toronto's summer calendar.

About the films:

Labyrinth (1986): Living in a dream-world of fantasy and enchantment, the plucky and petulant adolescent, Sarah, finds herself once again being forced to babysit her infant stepbrother Toby. --In a fit of rage she wishes that goblins would take him far away. But now that her wish is granted, as if by magic, young Sarah must embark on a dangerous rescue mission, confronting Goblin King Jareth's seemingly impenetrable labyrinth within an ethereal realm of sneaky creatures and eerie mystique. Can Sarah save innocent Toby from the clutches of the nefarious Jareth before he is gone forever?

Space Jam (1996): Swackhammer an evil alien theme park owner, needs a new attraction at Moron Mountain. When his gang, the Nerdlucks, heads to Earth to kidnap Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes, Bugs challenges them to a basketball game to determine their fate. The aliens agree, but they steal the powers of NBA basketball players, including Larry Bird and Charles Barkley, so Bugs gets some help from superstar Michael Jordan.
